Somewhat off the beaten track, Sifnos is an island for connoisseurs. It is not on any of the typical island-hoppers’ ferry lines, nor is it known for its beaches (though the south coast has several enchanting ones), so the sunburnt masses who make certain Cycladic islands unbearable in the summer stay away. Instead, it attracts its own pleasant crowd of regulars – artists and intellectuals, rather than party animals and beach bums – who appreciate the uniqueness of the island, its landscape, architecture, traditional vibe, pottery workshops and famously good food. Feel part of that crowd by staying in this glorious 19th-century neoclassical mansion in the hilltop village of Artemonas; it has been owned by the same family – ship owners, musicians, journalists and a theatre director – for six generations.

Don’t expect butlers, flatscreen TVs, Jacuzzis or even ensuite bathrooms: this is the real thing. Prepare meals in the traditional kitchen (or walk to the local taverna), take in the views from the terrace, admire family heirlooms in the living room, and sleep on brass beds. Absolutely charming.

We loved our stay in this beautiful historic house with large flower filled terrace and marvelous view. The hosts were warm and wonderful. An unforgettable experience!

Nikos and Julietta are wonderful hosts and very helpful. The house is a fantastic old mansion with lots of original furniture and decorations. The terrace is large with beautiful flowers and a view to die for! The backyard is huge and with lots of toys for children, even a well equipped treehouse. The Bus stop is right down the stairs.

Nikos and family are amazing hosts and have taken care of any single detail. The communication with them was perfect and we couldn’t have been luckier in having them as hosts. Now about the place itself. The photos are great but the place is even more incredible in person. The house is quite spacious and it is maintained very well. The location is also perfect as you can walk to all the various cafes, restaurants, bars, supermarket, etc. etc. There is also a parking a block away so its easy to have access to it. The bathrooms are perfect, remodeled in the last few years but maintaining the overall character of the house. The kitchen has all the amenities you could ask for. With the windows shutters it was easy to control the amount of sun (heat) and the place was extremely comfortable. The high ceilings also helped maintain the space cool. I think there may have been AC available but it was not needed at all. There is so much to see and do in Sifnos but just staying at the house is an experience on its own. I want to go back soon and I would highly recommend staying at this house.
